Yucatan November 2014

 

Brian and Pat Wetton joined the Bird Holidays trip in 2014 to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It was lead by John McLoughlin. Brian and Pat personally saw 226 species.

 

The itinerary was:

12th Nov     Flight from Gatwick to Cancun with BA & on to Tulum

                   (overnight at Don Diego de la Selva in Tulum)

13th             Tulum via Bacalar Lagoon & Xpuyil to Puerto Calakmul

                   (four nights at Puerto Calakmul Forest Lodge)

14th             Puerto Calakmul & the entrance road to Calakmul          

15th             Calakmul

16th             Chicanna, Xpuyil, Hormiguero & Cueva de Mercelago

17th             Puerto Calakmul via Silvituc Lake & Champoton to Uxmal

                   (four nights at Uxmal Lodge)

18th             Uxmal

19th             Uxmal to Celestun

20th             Ruta Puuc to Kabah, sayil & Sta Elena

21st             Uxmal via Izamal to Chichen Itza

                   (three nights at Hacienda Chichen)

22nd            Chichen Itza

23rd             Via Timizin to Rio Lagartos & Rio Colorados

24th             Chichen Itza via Chemax & Coba Lake to Tulum

Puerto Calakmul(PC): forest edge with pools & fringing scrub.

Chicanna(CH): forest edge with Mayan ruins.

Xpuyil(XP): rough grassland & scrub with marsh & small pool.

Hormiguero(HO): forest with small lake.

Cueva de Mercelago(CM): bat roost in cave.

Silvituc(SV): large lake with fringing marsh.

Champoton(CP): sandy shore & harbour.

 

Uxmal(UX): Mayan ruins with managed forest & glades.

Celestun(CE): estuary, mangrove, shore & dune scrub with small pools.

Ruta Puuc(RP): maize fields, forest edge & Mayan ruins at Kabah(KB).

Chichen Itza(CI): gardens, forest trail & Mayan ruins.

Timizin Road(TR): grassland & wet scrub north of town.

Rio Lagartos(RL): harbour, estuary, salt pans & shore.

Rio Colorados(RC): riverine forest.

Chemax(CX): roadside dry forest.

Coba(CO): large lake with fringing marsh, forest edge & Mayan ruins
