Panama: March 2016

Brian and Pat Wetton went on the Bird Holidays trip to Panama in March 2016. The leaders were John McLoughlin and Euclides (Kilo) Campos and the other participants were Craig Thomas, Moira Brett, Sue Cable and Philip & Frances Skinner. We recorded 447 species and 49 “lifers”.

Old Gamboa Road & Summit Grounds (GS)

Open grassland with light woodland and wooded ponds. Gamboa River.

Radisson Hotel grounds with golf course. In the Canal Zone.

 

Pipeline Road (PR)

Canal Zone rainforest in the Soberania National Park with canopy tower.

 

Panama Bay (PB)

Pacific shoreline near Panama City with mudflats and mangrove scrub.

 

Campo Chagres N.P. (CC)

Mixed deciduous and evergreen forest in the eastern Canal Zone.

 

La Campana (LC)

A forested area in Altos de Campana National Park west of the Canal.

Gorgona Lake (GL)

A shallow lake near a new coastal resort complex on the Pacific slope as

we travelled west to El Valle.

 

El Valle and Cerro Gaital (EV)

El Valle is situated in a volcanic bowl with forested hills and wooded

gardens around the town of Anton El Valle. Cerro Gaital is a forest trail

on the western flank of the peaks.

 

Cienaga Macanas (CM)

Extensive wetlands and coastal grasslands in the Pacific lowlands.

 

Santa Fe N.P. (SF)

A forested valley of the River Mulaba on the Caribbean slope within  the

Santa Fe National Park.

 

Las Lajas (LL)

A resort and coastal grassland with flowering trees on the Pacific shore.

 

Boquete (BQ)

A small town with gardens and riverside scrub on the eastern side of

Volcan Baru.

 

Los Quetzales Trail (LQ)

Forested trail on the wet eastern flanks of Volcan Baru.

 

Finca Larida (FL)

A coffee plantation with a garden of flowering shrubs.

 

Rio Caldera (RC)

Riverside woodland and scrub near Boquete.

 

Casa Grande at Bambito (CG)

Riverside forest and hotel gardens on the western slope of Volcan Baru.

 

Cuestra de Piedra (CP)

Canyon with remnant mid-elevation forest on the western side of Volcan

Baru.

 

Cielita Sur (CS)

A garden with hummingbird feeders near Bambito.

 

 

Volcan Baru (VB)

Forest edge on the lower slopes at Cerro Punta.

 

Finca Janson (FJ)

A coffee farm with mid-elevation forest and ponds near Volcan.

 

La Amistad (LA)

The forested western slope of Volcan Baru is part of the International

Park of La Amistad. We visited the lower slopes and rivers.

 

El Respingo (ER)

The high western slopes of Volcan Baru are a forested continuation of

the Quetzales Trail. A ranger station is accessible at El Respingo.

 

Cerro Azul (CA)

Wooded gardens at Las Nubes on the slopes of Cerro Azul to the east

of Panama City.
